Help… I’ve Inherited a Logo!

You love the organisation. You believe in what it stands for. But every time you open Canva, update a poster, or create a social media post… you’re faced with that logo.

Whether you’ve recently become the social media guru for a local community group, or you’re now looking after a long-established charity or organisation, inheriting an outdated logo can feel surprisingly limiting.

The tricky part? That logo often already carries years of recognition, memories, and meaning — which can make changing it feel almost impossible.

But here’s the good news: modernising your brand doesn’t always mean starting from scratch.

Why Does It Matter?

Your brand is more than just a logo. It’s the way your organisation looks, feels, and is perceived by your audience.

An outdated logo can sometimes unintentionally give the impression that your organisation is outdated too — even when the work you do is innovative, welcoming, and impactful.

Think about it this way: imagine if McDonald's still used its original logo today — the one with the slightly terrifying burger mascot. It simply wouldn’t connect with modern audiences in the same way.

Brands naturally evolve over time, and local organisations deserve that opportunity too.

So… What Can I Actually Do About It?

When a logo is already printed on banners, flyers, uniforms, Facebook pages, and community leaflets, a complete redesign can feel unrealistic.

Thankfully, small changes can make a huge difference without losing the heart of your organisation.

Here are five simple ways to modernise your logo without breaking the bank — or upsetting your loyal supporters.

1. Refresh the Colours

Colour can completely change the energy of a brand.

If your current colours feel dull, outdated, or no longer reflect your organisation’s personality, even subtle adjustments can instantly modernise your look.

Try experimenting with:

  • Brighter or softer shades

  • Increased vibrancy

  • Warmer or cooler tones

  • Simplified colour palettes

You don’t always need brand-new colours — sometimes a refined version of what you already have works perfectly.

2. Modernise the Font

Fonts carry personality, and older logos often use typefaces that no longer feel current.

In many organisations, the original font files have long since disappeared, making updates difficult anyway — so this can be the perfect opportunity for a refresh.

If you want to stay close to your current style, AI tools such as ChatGPT can help identify similar modern alternatives.

Websites such as DaFont and 1001 Fonts also offer a huge variety of downloadable fonts, many of which can be used within platforms like Canva, Adobe Express, or even Microsoft Office.

Even small font changes — such as switching from serif to sans-serif, or adjusting font weight — can make a logo feel far more modern while still remaining recognisable.

3. Improve the Composition & Spacing

Sometimes the issue isn’t the logo itself — it’s how everything is arranged.

Take a step back and look at:

  • Spacing between letters

  • Alignment of text and icons

  • Balance within the overall design

  • Hierarchy between different words or elements

This is also where introducing a second complementary font can help create contrast and clarity.

Our advice? Stick to no more than two fonts within a logo, and make sure one is clearly more dominant than the other. This keeps your branding clean, professional, and easy to read.

4. Reconsider Your Icon

If your logo includes a symbol or icon, ask yourself:

  • Does it still represent who we are?

  • Does it add meaning?

  • Or is it simply there because it always has been?

You may find the icon could be:

  • Simplified

  • Modernised

  • Integrated into the text itself

  • Replaced entirely

  • or Removed altogether

Sometimes the strongest logos are actually the simplest.

5. Add the Finishing Touches

This final step is entirely optional — but it can help elevate your logo from “something we made” to something that feels intentionally designed.

This could include:

  • Subtle shapes or textures

  • Cleaner line work

  • Spacing refinements

  • Supporting brand elements

  • Modern layout adjustments

Just remember: less is often more.

One of the best things you can do is step away from the design for a few hours, then revisit it with fresh eyes. If it still feels clear, balanced, and true to your organisation — you’re probably on the right track.
